HBO lists The Last of Us as a 2023 series set twenty years after a parasitic fungal infection has devastated the world. Hardened survivor Joel is hired to smuggle Ellie, a teenage girl, to the rebel Fireflies. What begins as a dangerous assignment becomes a journey across a broken United States, where their growing connection is tested by threats and hard choices.
The post-apocalyptic setting gives the story room to ask what survival means when trust is scarce and communities are fragile. Its core is the changing relationship between two people with very different defenses against loss. The Last of Us may appeal to viewers drawn to character-led science fiction, tense journeys through a transformed world, and drama centered on an uneasy bond.
